This page is intended as a guide for the lay person who is interested in having a Website but is unfamiliar with the process.

I will attempt to take some of the mystery out of the subject and briefly explain in easy-to-understand terms how I can turn your idea into reality.

So what is a Domain?

A domain is your identity on the Internet.

Each domain has its own unique name which you choose and which must then be registered — in the same way as a company name has to be registered, and is unique to one particular company.

Anyone can have a domain... A company, an organisation or a private individual can register any name of their choice. The steps are:
decide upon a suitable name:
find out if it is available, i.e not already in use:
have it registered.

Once registered, you have presence on the Internet in your own right. Thus you will be seen on the Internet in your own name and not that of your ISP (Internet Service Provider). For example, www.myname.co.uk for the Web site, and me@myname.co.uk for e-mail.

How do I register a domain?

Simple... leave it to me.

I will check your chosen name for availability; register it, and then create the domain on the Internet for you. In addition to Web space, you can have as many e-mail addresses on the domain as you wish. You can then either have all e-mails forwarded to your current e-mail address, or your e-mail software can be configured to receive directly from your domain. You may, of course, have both if you wish.

The charge is £20 per two years to register a UK domain (i.e. those ending in .co.uk , .org.uk or .ltd.uk) or £20 per year for a global top level domain (i.e. those ending in .com or .net).

What is hosting?

Once created, your domain has to live somewhere.

Space for your e-mail accounts and the Website needs to be allocated on computers (servers) with a permanent connection to the Internet. All of this is taken care of for you at the time I register the new domain. When the Website is up and running, the charge for hosting the site on a server is £10 per month. You may choose to pay either monthly or annually.

Now all I need is a website!

Leave that to me, too.

In consultation with you, I will design and build a suitable Website. The site will then be placed on the Internet and, if you wish, submitted for inclusion in the appropriate search engines. An ongoing part of my service is the maintenance of the site, making any changes you request from time to time.

Charges for this are determined by the amount of time involved.Every Web page is different, so it is difficult to give a precise guide to the charges for building a Website. They are determined by the complexity of the page, but are on average between £50 and £100 per page.
